Track Premiere: This is Not an Elephant – ‘Only’

Prog rockers This is Not an Elephant formed out of the ashes of Munich, Germany’s, Tanertill, another heavy, electro-tinged prog group. With This is Not an Elephant, guitarist/vocalist Andreas Krebs leans more into alternative rock leanings than the heavier influences found in Tantertill; new single “Only” bears resemblance to groups like Audioslave, Karnivool and Tool while retaining its metallic tendencies.

“Writing ‘Only’ turned out to be trickier than I originally thought,” Krebs explains. “Writing the opening riff wasn’t the hard part, it was the first verse, which ended up changing quite dramatically. Initially, there were clean guitar chords which after we recorded the guitars, I decided it didn’t sound modern or atmospheric enough. The vocals were already recorded at the time, so I had to find something that would fit better to them. After some fiddling around with my gear I settled for a whammy and a reverse delay. Then I added a whole lot of reverb for ambience. I’m happy with the result actually. And the best part was, that Randy’s sick bassline was kept intact, so there were no downsides! The rest of the song was heavily inspired by Tool and Katatonia. I especially like the second verse with the amazing vocals. Also vocalist, David, outdid himself on the chorus.”
